Kilmuir Graveyard, Isle of Skye
The graveyard is situated on the north west of the Isle of Skye and overlooks the Outer Isles. Flora MacDonald lived in the Kilmuir area before moving to the Outer Isles to look after her brothers house. After her capture she returned to Skye and married the son of Kingsburgh. Times were hard and the family moved to America where MacDonald of Kingsburgh fought in the War of Independance. Flora MacDonald returned to Skye followed by her husband. They stayed at Kingsburgh. The remains of her house no longer exist. She died there and it was said that 3,000 people attended her funeral. The original grave stone broke and parts were taken by tourists. In 1880 the present cross was erected by public subscription.
